Wale has officially signed ontoRoss’ Maybach Music label. News of the potential link-up has been floating around the Internet for some time now but the paperwork has just recently been finished and all the signatures have been put in place.
The DC rapper confirmed the news via his official Twitter account and said that even though he is now on Ross’ roster, he will still be managed by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.
“The music wont change…the energy will! Maybach Music,” tweeted Wale on Saturday (February 5). “and Roc Nation still handles the business! ..shoutout to @RichKleiman.”
To commemorate Wale’s signing, Maybach Films filmed a video of Ross in the presence of Paul Wall and Johnny Dang, giving Wale a new Maybach medallion in addition to a black diamond Cartier watch, reportedly worth $44,000. Check the vid:
In the short clip, Wale talks about the differences between being on a major label as opposed to Ross’ and said he looks forward to the anticipated creative freedom.
“Rather than saying ‘I want to put out Ambitious Girl, I want to put out Diary or I want to put out this joint that I feel is good for hip hop, No Soup whatever I want,” he explained.
“Instead of having some people say, ‘Nah, yo black people ain’t gonna believe that, that’s not what black people want from you.’ I be like, ‘Rozay, my heart is in this record right now.’ [And he would reply,] ‘Let’s do it.’ Ain’t no. ‘you gotta talk to this person, beg this person.’ It ain’t no begging. It’s the music I want to put out.”
