The iPad 2 hasn't yet gone on sale in retail stores, but it's already back-ordered in Apple's online store.
Apple's iPad 2 went on sale online at 1 a.m. Friday at store.apple.com.
Those putting in the first orders were promised shipping in as little as 24 hours, but as the day has gone on and the orders have rolled in, shipping has been pushed to two to three weeks, according to Apple's online store.
It appears Apple might have some robust first-day sales on its hands. The first-generation iPad, which the iPad 2 is replacing in the company's lineup, has sold more than 15 million units since it first went on sale in April 2010.
Apple's retail stores will begin selling the new tablet at 5 p.m. Friday, along with other retailers such as Best Buy, Target, Sam's Club and Wal-Mart.
AT&T and Verizon are selling the iPad 2 as well -- only in Wi-Fi and 3G models, since they'e looking to sign up iPad 2 users to a 3G data plan.
Other than Apple, the only places officially selling the iPad 2 online now are AT&T and Wal-Mart.
For now Best Buy, Target, Sam's Club and Verizon's websites say they're selling the iPad 2 in-store only.
With a much more widespread retail presence, some questioned whether the iPad 2 would result in sellouts or long lines of consumers before 5 p.m. By Friday afternoon, some lineups have beenreported.
