Singer/actress Janet Jackson has teamed up with Lionsgate Studios to develop and produce her own feature film.
Jackson, who’s starred in three Tyler Perry films that were done through Lionsgate, including Why Did I Get Married and Four Colored Girls, tells the Hollywood Reporter that her new venture come as a natural fit for her.
“Many people forget I started out as an actor”, she said. “I have been fortunate to work in the film industry, though not as much as I would like. I have a passion for storytelling and have been doing it through my music for some time.“
“My experiences of working with the creative group at Lionsgate have been powerful and exciting,” Jackson said. “We've made three films together so far, directed by the gifted and prolific Tyler Perry. There is genius at this studio in every department. They don't just make films, they nurture artists who want to make great films.”
There is no word yet on what type of movie she will be producing and if she’ll be starring. The film is being negotiated through Jackson’s company, jdj Entertainment and Lionsgate executives.
Mike Paseornek, President of Lionsgate motion picture development, said that Janet, a force on stage and on camera, should be a talent behind the scenes too. “She is a powerful on-screen presence, with a vast audience, and we believe she will be an equally powerful presence behind the scenes,” Paseornek said. “We are honored to be able to provide a home for her ideas, passion and immense talent.”
Jackson is currently on her Up Close & Personal world tour, which she is hitting dates all around the world that was voted on by her fans. The tour is supported by her latest album Number Ones.
Her memoir True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself was released in early March and is a New York Times bestseller.
