HOUSTON (Reuters) – The Army Corps of Engineers will open a key spillway to divert Mississippi River flooding from two major cities within 24 hours, the Louisiana Governor's office said on Friday.

The Corps said it informed Governor Bobby Jindal that it had been given authority to open the Morganza Spillway in that time frame, said Christina Stephens, spokeswoman for Louisiana's office of homeland security.
