FOLSOM, CA (KCRA/CNN) – A man was caught on camera trying to break into a California prison more than once.

Marvin Lane Ussery is the suspect police say was caught on thermal imaging cameras jumping over a fence and breaking into New Folsom Prison, in New Folsom, CA.

Investigators say that, believe it or not, it's not uncommon for inmates to try to smuggle stuff back into prison.

"We're getting smarter, you know, as they're getting smarter, so are we," said Tony Quinn, a spokesman for New Folsom Prison.

Investigators say Ussery is a parolee who recently served time inside New Folsom prison. He reportedly spent seven hours inside the facility before being captured.

Prison officials said they have arrested many former Folsom prison inmates who are familiar with the 882 acre property after they tried to sneak back on to prison grounds. Those who are arrested are hiding phones, alcohol or drugs in bags or backpacks.

Cell phone smuggling has jumped from 896 phones confiscated per month last year to more than 1,200 confiscated per month this year.

"They go out and do weed abatement, pick up trash on the side of the road, so they have access to areas just off prison grounds," Quinn said.

State prison official say they do not have exact data on how big a problem this is, but they say they average an arrest every week statewide.
