This week, the R&B and pop singer topped Billboard's 200 chart for the first time in 26 years. His new country album, "Tuskegee," scored the top slot in its third week on the list, selling 129,000 copies. Richie even managed to beat Adele's "21" album, which slipped to No. 2. The British singer's second album -- a chart staple since its release -- is often in the No. 1 spot.
"Tuskegee" features 13 tracks recorded as duets with Richie and various country vocalists, including Shania Twain, Blake Shelton and Willie Nelson. Richie, 62, performed alongside many of the artists last Friday on the CBS special, "ACM Presents: Lionel Richie & Friends in Concert."
Richie was thrilled to hear the No. 1 album news:
I am ecstatic about being #1. I couldn't have done it with my fans, the great artist on the album and my amazing team. -Lionel
In 1986, Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling" album spent two weeks in the top spot. His sophomore release, 1983's "Can't Slow Down," also led the chart.
