Thrilling lunar news: tonight there is a Full Pink Moon, the traditional name of the April full moon. Why the name Full Pink Moon? Per MSNBC, the term is “supposedly as a tribute to the grass pink or wild ground phlox, considered one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other monikers include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and, among coastal American Indian tribes, the Full Fish Moon, for when the shad came upstream to spawn.” None of those appellations is also the name of a Nick Drake song, which is why we prefer “Pink Moon.”Remember to look at the sky tonight. Maybe use a mnemonic device to make sure you don’t forget. Something like, MOON (“move over, other nights”) or APRIL (“all please remember it’s lunar”). Or draw a huge pink circle on your hand. Or write a little note to yourself on the label of the bottle of wine you’ll be drinking after work—“Look up. Must be outside.”
