This year’s finale of So You Think You Can Dance made for a unique first since Tiffany Maher, Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer, Eliana Girard and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp are all ballet dancers. It was also the first time that the popular Fox dance competition crowned two champions, one guy and one girl.
After weeks of rehearsals, injuries, and near-nervous meltdowns, Eliana Girard and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp were named the winners in front a judges’ panel of six that included Lil’ C, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen (my favorite), Tyce Diorio, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.
Although two winners were crowned, the finale highlighted each dancer’s amazing talent for a final time as they performed the judges’ favorite dances and their own picks.
As each judge gave reasons for their favorite performances, the finalists hit the stage with previously eliminated top twenty dancers and the All-Stars.
Also on hand for the finale were SYTYCD’s Twitch (who probably should get his own show at this point since he’s been on SYTYCD so many times), Comfort, and Alex Wong.
Here is a rundown of the performance highlights:
- The entire top 20 returned to dance a new group number choreographed by Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott.
- The repeat performances of the judges’ favorites included Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo’s hip-hop routine to The Cure’s “Love Cats” performed by Amelia Lowe and Will Thomas. Travis Wall’s Titanic-inspired contemporary number was performed by Matthew Kazmierczak and Audrey Case to the Righteous Brothers classic “Unchained Melody.”
- Cheon and all-star Kathryn McCormick performed Tyce Diorio’s contemporary piece, the Holocaust tribute “Eli, Eli.”
- One of the new numbers was a stellar performance by Cyrus who joined Twitch, Comfort and choreographer Christopher Scott for a card-shark inspired hip-hop number.
- Dragon House performed. Awesome! You knew from the beginning that they would be referenced multiple times. Although Boris Penton and Andre Rucker didn’t make it past Vegas Week, their inclusion in the season finale was still fun to watch.
- The top ten finalists danced to a jungle themed routine with ten fan favorites from past seasons. It was great once you factored out the ridiculous, elementary school looking costumes.
- Somewhere in there, Carly Rae Jepsen performed “Kiss Me” (and no it wasn’t the pop hit from Sixpence None the Richer, although it would have been a better choice. Can you say snooze fest?)
Although we were hoping for Will or even Cole to make it into the final two for the guys, Chehon worked hard to take the win for the guys. When host Cat Deeley announced Eliana as the winner, the finalist was fell to her knees to her knees in shock and screamed, “What just happened?”
Who did you want to win Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance?
