According to NBC Chicago, Knuckles, a DJ and producer who is credited with helping found house music, died in Chicago, his cause of death unknown. A statement is expected to be released Tuesday (April 1).
Born Francis Nicholls in New York, Knuckles moved to Chicago in the '70s where he was the musical director of the The Warehouse nightclub, the location where house was born. The genre of music got its name from the iconic club. He later opened his own club, Power Plant.
A pioneer for the DJ set, Knuckles is responsible for myriad dance classics, such as 1986's "Your Love" and 1987's "Baby Wants to Ride" and remixes like Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" and Hercules and Love Affair's "Blind."
Remembrances of the house legend have been flooding Twitter since Monday evening, with Questlove tweeting, "jesus man. Frankie Knuckles was so under-appreciated. he was the dj that dj's aspired to be. true dance pioneer," QTip stating, "FRANKIE KNUCKLES pretty much was the reason HOUSE music was called HOUSE cause of his warehouse days.
