Thom Berry, a spokesman for the State Law Enforcement Division, told NBC station WYFF of Greenville that a campus police officer was investigating a report of a car break-in and came upon two people in a car.
The car took off, striking the officer, who opened fired, Berry said. One person in the car was killed, and the other was in custody, Berry said. The officer was treated at the scene and wasn't believed to have been seriously injured, he said.
Spartanburg County sheriff's Lt. Kevin Bobo said late Monday night that no gunman was loose on campus and that the college was in no danger.
The school, a private junior college about 25 miles northeast of Greenville, issued a campuswide lockdown and told students to remain in their dormitory rooms after the shooting about 8:30 p.m. ET near Powell Mill Road, which runs through the campus.
