Even President Obama has taken notice of the latest news on O.J. Simpson.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting with his economic advisers, Obama noted the breaking news out of Los Angeles: That police are investigating whether a knife reportedly found on his property might be connected to the 1994 stabbing deaths of his ex-wife and her friend.

"I thought it might be useful to take a small break from the spectacle of the political season — and now I gather O.J. — to focus on something that really matters to the American people, and that is, how is the economy doing," Obama said as Vice President Biden, sitting to his right, chuckled.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Obama had been in the White House Situation Room for a secure teleconference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and its chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah. Afterward, the president stopped at a bank of televisions outside the Situation Room, all tuned to cable television news, where the Simpson case was the lead story.

"He did seem bemused," Earnest said.
