Kentucky health officials have reported the state's first probable death related to vaping.

The Kentucky Department of Public Health reported the death in its weekly online update of investigations related to e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury.

"We are saddened to announce the death associated with this outbreak," said Eric Friedlander, acting secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. "To protect public health, we urge Kentuckians—especially young people—to stop using all vaping products."

The victim has not been identified. Officials said there have been 48 reports of use-associated lung injuries, and the death is included in 13 probable cases.

There have been seven confirmed cases of use-associated lung injuries and 15 pending cases, while 11 reports were determined to not be use-associated lung injuries.

Two reported cases were residents of other states who were treated in Kentucky hospitals.

Health officials said a probable case involves a person who has a lung injury that is believed to be caused by vaping, but the person may also have other health issues like the flu or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A confirmed case means there is no possible cause for the lung disease other than vaping.

The Department of Public Health has been investigating e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injuries since Sept. 2019.
