Many working Saginaw residents don’t have reliable transportation, so a mother-daughter team aims to fix that problem.
Sushma Jones, a former truck and bus driver, noticed a community need when friends started asking her for rides, whether it was to work, the grocery store or to visit friends and family, she said. She felt inspired to start D&S Transportation Services with her mother Dorothy, a chauffeur.
“We’re just trying to help the community get to and from work and appointments,” Sushma Jones said. “Whatever they need bus transportation (for).”
The company will pick up and drop off residents anywhere in a 125-mile radius from Saginaw, Jones said. The company specializes in taking people to work, including a route to and from Frankenmuth, but will help solve any transportation need in the community, she said.
Within the city and township, D&S charges $10 for one-way rides and $20 for a round trip. They offer half-off discounts to veterans and seniors, who sometimes need rides to the Saginaw VA center or to dialysis appointments, Jones said. For rides within the radius but outside the city and township, the price is $1.69 a mile, she said.
The company has one bus at the moment, but Jones hopes to obtain more soon, she said.
“It’s an inspiring moment,” Jones said of being able to help her community. “It meets the values and cores that we have... the positivity, the growth, it just feels good."
D&S Transportation is located at 4140 State St. It can be reached by phone at 989-751-9827 or on Facebook.
