Searching the N-Word on Google Maps Produces White House (Blog)

Despite a temporary suspension of Google's Map Maker program, someone still managed to deface the popular service.

The Washington Post on Tuesday reported that a Google Maps search inquiry for the racist term "n***** king" will direct you to the White House.

"Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused," a Google spokeswoman told PCMag. "Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly."

As of Wednesday afternoon, the search yielded no results, though USA Todayreported that results vary by location.

A similar search of the phrase "n***a house," however, still zooms directly in on the White House—"Iconic home of America's president," as the map says. (PCMag partially obscured the insulting term in the image above.)

This is not the first instance of erroneous Google Maps results. Last month, a snowboard shop known as Edward's Snow Den was edited into Google Maps inside the White House executive mansion, a reference to the NSA leaker currently on the run in Russia.

Eagle-eyed users also spotted the phrase "Google Review Policy is crap" with a frowny face overlaid onto the map in a nearby area of Pakistan. A Skype logo could also be found in the vicinity of Lahore, Pakistan.A week later, users found an Android robot relieving itself onto an Apple logo in the streets of Rawalpindi, Pakistan—in the vein of those Peeing Calvin decals.

Google chalked it up to inappropriate use of the Map Maker tool, which was temporarily suspended on May 12after manually approving edits proved too cumbersome.
